Managing newspaper editors and freelance journalists
Workshop with successful freelance journalist on how to get more free press for your company or client.
I’ve been a successful freelance features writer for six years. I have a weekly slot in the FT, and write regularly for broadsheets.
Over those six freelance years, I’ve devised the best methods for approaching newspaper editors to get articles commissioned. As a recipient of hundreds of marketing emails a week, some of which I turn into articles, I also know the best ways to appeal to freelances.
I recently created and ran a four hour workshop on these two subjects for PhonepayPlus, a regulatory organisation that frequently deals with press. I took time preparing an informative and well-structured course, but was still amazed by how well it was received. PhonepayPlus’ head of communications Shirley Dent said:
“Angus Watson’s course delivers what all good communications and media teams need: insider insight into the way journalists’ think and write, guiding the group through how to write a pitch to freelancers and how to place a story, all backed up with practical examples and advice.’”
As a result of this success, I’m offering this workshop to other organisations who’d like to improve their interaction with editors and journalists. Each course will be tailored to the particular company’s requirements, but general areas covered are:
• What do you want from the papers?
• What papers and journalists want from you
• The three types of article
• Turning your point into a story
• Finding a slot
• Finding the correct editor or freelance
• Creating a pitch
• Maintaining relationships
At the end of each workshop, each delegate will be much better informed on how to increase coverage for their organisation. They will also have a prepared a submission to an editor or freelance which they should be able to use immediately afterwards.
Duration: Four hours, with two five minute and one 20 minute break.
Cost: £800
Number of Delegates: Maximum eight
